key west's mysterious history
Key West was founded by Ponce De Leon and claimed by Spain in 1513.
An Alabama resident bought the island for 2,000 dollars in 1821.
In 1823 Key West was claimed to port entry to America. In 1828 the island accepted their first full town.
In 1846 a hurricane struck and destroyed much of Key West.
In 1886 half of the island's town was yet destroyed not by a hurricane, but a fire. The town was restored.
Here comes those mighty gusts of the hurricane once again striking Key West in 1935 on Labor Day.
In 1940 and 1950 the population doubled in Key West.
In 1961 communications with Cuba were suspended and another in- expensive blow out happened.
The 1990's have seen much improvement from the many devastation's that have occured.
